Kaitaia College

We run a slightly different programme to the others in that it is more like traditional schooling with trades taught within multiple option lines.

We are also partnering with Papa Taiao Earthcare to make Aquaculture/Moana Restoration available for study in the Far North.

The trades skills offered are in: Automotive, Automotive body and  Mechanical Engineering option lines.

Agriculture is also offered as an academy programme.

Programmes

  • Automotive & Engineering

    Automotive & Engineering

This is a part time programme offered across two years (site dependant). Students achieve a range of key tasks including carrying out general engineering tasks, demonstrating knowledge of petrol fuel systems, automotive cooling systems and air conditioning, and knowledge of safe work practices in a workshop.

  • Agriculture / Horticulture

    Agriculture / Horticulture

This programme offers students the opportunity to work through three levels of learning. This full time course involves working on a local farm for one or two days a week to learn a wide range of skills, including calf rearing and calving, handling livestock and use of farm vehicles.

  • Moana Restoration / Aquaculture

    Moana Restoration / Aquaculture

Students will gain an introduction to aquaculture by studying paua and oyster biology and environmental best practice for marine farming. They will learn how to spawn and grow paua for re-seeding and devise ways to reduce marine biosecurity threats.

This academy offers both industry-based Unit Standards and the problem-solving cross curricular action-oriented Achievement Standards. For the very motivated students it will be possible to gain course endorsement for University Entrance.

As part of the course students will participate in the Young Enterprise Scheme.
